You are your own best advocate when it comes to achieving a healthy smile!
Cavity prevention is entirely up to you and the choices you make. While this may sound a bit daunting, it should not cause you any stress. Cavity prevention is relatively easy with just a few daily choices that go a long way in keeping your mouth healthy.
Cavities are formed by bacteria inside the mouth that are allowed to hang out and take up residence for too long.
Each day, there are millions of bacteria present inside your mouth. Most of these bacteria are there to help you out by breaking down tiny food particles left behind after eating. The bacteria congregate at these food particles and work to break them down so that they are removed from the mouth. While this is a helpful endeavor, if these bacteria are not removed from the mouth on a regular basis, they will begin to wreak havoc on the teeth.
As the bacteria start breaking down the food particles, they produce acids, which assist in the process. It is these acids that do the damage to your teeth.
It is also important to understand that the more sugar is present inside your mouth, the more acid is produced. Bacteria thrive on sugar, and a diet high in refined sugar attracts more bacteria to the teeth – thus promoting the production of acid. As the acids work to break down food particles, they eventually begin attacking the teeth. If the acids are allowed to remain on the teeth for extended periods of time, they will eat holes through the teeth. These holes are known as cavities.
The greatest method of cavity prevention not only involves a diet low in sugar but also a method that includes daily brushing and flossing. Brushing helps to loosen the bacteria and acids from the teeth so that they are more easily rinsed away, and floss works to actually remove the bacteria from the gum line and in between the teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach.
